2nd batch of summerx

(summerx fur arent really long when shes just gave birth, somehow she plucks them all out for nest bedding.. sorry didnt took a nice picture due to dont want to stress her out too much ya.)

FANCY RATS AREN'T HAMSTERS but better! i say.

what are fancy rats you say?

Rats are clean, intelligent, affectionate pets that bond to their human companion, far less aggressive towards humans and rival rats, sensitive pets that have feelings, easily taught to come by name and learn variety of tricks

1. life expectancy 2-3 years and beyond

2. mother rats 21-28 days gestation

3. adult bucks(males) usually weigh 400-700g, does(females) around 200-500g

4. they need big cages if many are kept, a hamster cage no matter how 'large' is not suitable for adult rats

5. needs another rat company and should never be kept alone ideally should be kept in groups, keeping two or more bucks or either two does are recommanded

6. they must live indoors, their cage should be site in the busy part of the home as they loves watching humans passing by

7. wire cages are by far the best housing for rats than aquarium cages for rats as ventilation is important (included a sheltered nestbox for a sleeping place) they loves tissue boxes or hammock to sleep on

8. baby rats enjoy playing toys with each other while adult rats prefer to sleep in or on it waiting for other rats or human to play together, toys like hamster, parrot, ferret toys, pipe, large glass jar, old clothes (rats arent interested in wheels)

9. like people, rats are omnivores.. aren't like hamster their diet you could give etc. dog cookies, veggies, grains, fruits, boiled meat or bones, sunflower seeds, wholemeal pasta bread, brown rice, unsweetened cereals.. easily found in your kitchen, even table scraps is okay but aviod sugary or fatty scraps

10. fresh water available at all times!

11. rats are extremely clean, rarely necessary to bathe rats but if needed use shampoos for kittens and dogs not human shampoo

12. putting a large cleaned stone or brick for them to wear down teir nails or you could use a human nail cutter but have styptic powder inhand, incase of bleeding and serious case of blood loss

13. rats do cage marking.. bedding consist of tissues, kitchen towels are better but whenever you chang ethe bedding make sure to leave a few bits of smelly bedding to help to reassure your rats it smells like home or they will keep marking till it becomes smellier

14. rats usually become fertile between 5-12 weeks

15. rats grows rapidly until they reaches 12-14weeks

16. fully weaned from 4-6 weeks

17. baby rats are known as kitten, open eyes between 13-16days but can hear and smell after few days of birth

18.yound rats have teeth that can gnaw from the moment they start eating soild food

19. rats have poor eyesight but senses of hearing and smell are much more sensitive than ours

placing one or both hands under its chest, behind front legs (not to squeeze)

20.handle your rats as much as possible whether they seems to like it or not at first and they will soon enjoy your company

21.one good way of getting your rats used to you is let them ride around the house on your shoulder or inside your sweater

22.needs at least an hours playtime outside their cage everyday

23. cage not placed direct to sunlight, humid weather like Singapore can cause dehydration, sometimes place a dog/cat sized bowl of cool water with iced cubes or iced vegetables or placed a fan near its cage

Red Discharge Around Eyes And/or Nose.!

do not worry its a symptom of distress. stained red are the rats mucus called porphyrin. discharge maybe present if your rat is ill or simply stress from moving to a new house

but if it continues for few days consult a vet

Head-weaving:

do not worry too if it move its head from side to side, it just helps the rat to see better when they look at stuff blury

but if the rat holds its head to one side permanently, this can be caused by inner ear infection or a brain tumour hence it needs urgent veterinary attention!

handle rats by its tail

live on their own! two rats are much happier and live longer than single rats and they're many times more interesting to watch.

hamster infomations FACTS !

1. life expectancy about 3years
2. adult hamster weights around 90-150gm
3. small about 3-5 inches (fitting in your palm size)
4. hamsters are great escape artists! especially syrians
5. they have enormous expandable cheekpouches for carring food and beedings back to their burrow
6. gestation period 19-20days (4-12 babies at a time)
7. weaning period 3-4weeks
8. warm blooded mammal in the rodent family
9. nocturnal (up at night, sleep during the day) therefore you may want to keep them in the living room rather than a bedroom so night time noise is not bothersome
10. hamster makes good beginner pets (fairly easy to care for)
11. relatively clean habits
12. friendly when handled often becoming quite tame easily
13. if not been handled enough from young they tends to be more aggressive
14. picked up holding it with both hands or one hamsd holding it against the body
15. caution should be used when approaching a hamster who's personality is unknown
16. hamsters have large incisor teeth thet continually grow needing to gnaw on things to wear down the teeth from overgrowing tooth
17. they too have feeling
18. give them your heart and they will too give them their's
19. bath them once a month
20. cage cleaned and change their bedding from 1-4weeks (when it smells)
21. learn tricks real fast
22. feed a teaspoon of veges a day if possible (exp. bean sprout)
23. syrians tends to bite lesser than dwaft once they're trained, but dwaft bite too even they are trained (it depends on your bonding)
24. black bears and syrians are the easiest to tame
25. having a poor eyesight and excellent hearing and a keen sense of smell
26. syrian cannot be kept with other hamsters after 8-10weeks of age
27. if the hamster is a child's pet, the child should be taught how to properly handle and care for the hamster
28. should not be allowing it to roam free around the house as you may have a hard time getting the little pal back again

DO NOT

-GIVE
fibers like cotton, shredded tissue paper as they do not break down in the hamster system and can get caught in their pouches or ingest them while eating
OR ceder or pine chips for nesting material as they contain oils called phenols that can slowly casue liver and kidney failure
-FEED
antibiotics and other drugs
OR anything acidic like oranges and lemons (so as Onion, Potato, Rhubarb, Tomato leaves, Cabbage too!)
